Runner's World Complete Book of Beginning Running (Runner's World Complete Books) by Amby Burfoot Anything written by Runner's World is good. This book is an asset to any beginning runner as it covers all of the bases. I especially like the section on cross-training. Cross training is a great way for beginners to get comfortable running a few days a week but maintain cardio by biking, swimming, or using gym equipment that they are already comfortable with. The section on running stretching is also good for beginning runners. For newbies, Runner's World is the premier publication in the running community.

No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running by John Bingham For beginning runners it can be painful to watch other runners sprint by you. Beginning running is a slow process and speed right out of the gate will do more harm than good in the long run. I recommend this book because in a world of fast cars, fast food, and get rich quick ideas... it is nice to slow down. Life isn't always about speed and if beginning running becomes a chore rather than an enjoyment your new running hobby will not last very long. Well written and an easy and enjoyable read.

The Runner's Handbook : The Bestselling Classic Fitness Guide for Beginning and Intermediate Runners (2nd rev Edition) by Bob Glover My last recommendation for beginning running is a book by Bob Glover. I like this book because not only is it written by a seasoned runner but a runner who has trained hundreds of beginning runners. It is one thing to run and another to teach about beginning running. Bob is a teacher and this valuable running resource should be on the book shelves of all beginner runners. This book also covers the transition from beginning running to the next level.
